Vince Gilligan finally clarifies the status of Pluribus Season 2 as fans patiently wait for its release following the first season’s conclusion in December 2025.
It has been over half a year since the hit Apple TV series introduced a new sci-fi universe, where the ultimate threat is not violence or misery but a forced, soul-erasing universal happiness.
With a back-to-back two-season order, fans expected Carol’s (Rhea Seehorn) story to continue immediately, but it looks like that won’t be the case.
Is Pluribus Season 2 Really Finished?
Vince Gilligan usually gives updates on Pluribus Season 2, but there’s still no definitive word on when it will finally be released.
That said, there have been rumors that the new season was already finished, but the genius creator has shot down the claims.
“It took us a while, we figured it out, but Season 2 is not technically all written,” he told Deadline after winning the Drama Series Writing award at the 2026 Emmys for the first time.
While the whole season is not yet complete, Gilligan gave a hopeful update, revealing that they have finally figured out the plot of all the episodes and that the first and second episodes are already written.
“We’ve broken it out, which is the hard part. In other words, the plot of all episodes (is figured out). The first and second are written,” he continued. “The rest of them are in various stages of being written, but we know what the whole season is, and we will share it soon with Rhea.”
Seehorn, who also won the night with Best Actress in a Drama Series for Pluribus, revealed that she hasn’t received any scripts yet, leaving her with no idea what will happen in Season 2.
But unlike the Better Call Saul star, Gilligan said he likes actors “Karolina and Samba” for not necessarily wanting to know anything.
“They kind of want to be surprised, which I kind of like that,” he explained.
What Is Pluribus Really About According to Vince Gilligan?
Premiering in November 2025, Pluribus introduced Carol, a cynical novelist who was surprisingly immune to a mysterious alien virus that turned the rest of humanity into a blissfully content hive mind called The Joining.
The Joining is a telepathic network that erases individual identities and infuses humanity with unwavering, contagious happiness.
As the peaceful collective consciousness wanted to help Carol and understand her immunity in order to assimilate her into their utopia, she actually wanted to reverse the global transformation.
The first season ended with Carol asking the alien hive to deliver an atom bomb in the crate, with Manousos (Carlos Manuel Vesga), who, like her, is immune to the virus, congratulating her for saving the world.
Carol used the bomb as her insurance policy in case the collective tried to force them to convert.
Vince Gilligan and Rhea Seehorn herself praised fans’ theories about what the show is really about, with suggestions including COVID, AI, grief, and isolation.
“It does seem timely via hindsight in terms of the advent of AI,” Gilligan said. “The idea for this predated both of us, but a lot of people are saying that they’re something to do with AI or loneliness or loss.”
But while he didn’t pick which of these is the show’s theme, he believed “all these things are true.”
“They all have validity. I really like hearing other people telling what the show is about,” he continued. “I’d rather not have to tell other people because I’d probably get it wrong … can’t see the forest from the trees.”
