Word has been going around that James Spader is going to be reprising the part of Ultron for the upcoming Vision series, and while everyone is guessing heads-or-tails on whether he’s just going to be a voice, or another humanoid robot, an unexpected third version has been rumored to come out.
Vision: Ultron Could Reportedly Be in Human Form
In a recent report from The Hollywood Reporter, they give a small hint at what kind of form Ultron is going to appear in. They write:
"Spader is reprising his role as Ultron, a sentient being created by Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, to act as a defense program but that instead turned against humanity, as seen in the movie Avengers: Age of Ultron… Ultron then had a hand in the creation of Vision, his 'son,' so to speak. It’s unclear whether Ultron will be returning as a robot or in human form."
Deadline has also reported that Spader’s part in the series ‘may not be voiceover.’
Seeing as Vision would be working with a television budget, it’s possible that having a human Ultron would be the cheaper option. After all, his CG model is incredibly complex and might cost a lot to bring back to the big screen. With Spader just showing up as himself, it would no doubt save the studio a lot of money from having to digitally replace him with CGI.
Previous Forms of Ultron
Ultron is essentially an AI, so he doesn’t really have a solid form, but he has taken over multiple ‘bodies’ throughout the course of his appearance.
His first real solid body was a broken down Iron Man drone which he uses to talk to the Avengers for the first time, then he jumps over to the robot body that he spends most of Age of Ultron in. He has one more upgrade for his robot in the final confrontation in Sokovia, and when Vision ‘destroys’ him, he’s in the form of a regular Ultron drone.
Besides his appearance in live-action, Ultron becomes the ultimate villain in Marvel’s What If…?, with him eventually taking over the Vibranium body that ended up being Vision and armoring himself up with a suit that looks like a classic Ultron body—complete with Infinity Stones.
How Does He Come Back?
It’s not clear how Ultron returns, but fans do speculate that he could be hiding in Vision’s AI this whole time and has just been waiting for the right time to strike. Some are going so far as to speculate that Tony Stark actually has a hidden backup of him hidden somewhere that’s disconnected from anything.
After all, Peter Parker did end up seeing an Ultron drone head (which was glowing) way back in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
With Vision being the lead of the series, it’s possible that Ultron could be looking to possess his body all over again. After all, it was his body to begin with until the Avengers decided to put the Mind Stone on it without even bothering to ask nicely.
No release date has been set for the Vision series.
