- Quick Answer: Kate Beckinsale stars in George A. Romero's final zombie film, directed by the Paz Brothers, focusing on survivors on a tropical island amidst the apocalypse.
The long-awaited finale to George A. Romero’s iconic zombie franchise, Night of the Living Dead, is finally set to conclude with Twilight of the Dead.
Before his death in 2017, Romero managed to co-write a film treatment with screenwriter Paolo Zelati. His widow, Suzanne Romero, later revived the project and oversaw the completion of the screenplay in 2021.
After several delays and a long-gestating development process, Twilight of the Dead is finally taking shape with a new lead, director, and financial backing.
Who Leads Twilight of the Dead?

Five years after the project was revived, Twilight of the Dead now has a new lead, with Underworld star Kate Beckinsale taking over from Milla Jovovich, as confirmed by Deadline.
“We’re thrilled to have Kate Beckinsale starring in Twilight of the Dead. Her extraordinary talent, emotional range, and commanding screen presence make her the perfect actress to lead a final chapter worthy of George’s legacy,” producer John Baldecchi said.
Jovovich, alongside Betty Gabriel, was previously announced to play the film’s lead roles in November 2024.
The Paz Brothers, Doron and Yoav Paz, are also set to helm the movie, replacing Brad Anderson, who joined the project in 2023 and has described Romero’s original films as a major influence on his work.
“Stepping into Romero’s world is the ultimate privilege for any genre filmmaker,” the new directors said in a joint statement. “This is more than a continuation, it’s a responsibility. We are committed to honoring his voice while delivering a visceral, terrifying, impactful experience for today’s audience that resonates beyond the screen.”
With Twilight of the Dead backed by the Romero estate, Bob Yari’s Magenta Light Studio has secured North American rights and is set to distribute the film theatrically across the United States and Canada.
Elsewhere, Bullet Train’s stunt veteran Ho Sung Pak is on board to direct stunt and action sequences. The film is driven by the Roundtable Entertainment team.
What is Twilight of the Dead About?

While official details about Twilight of the Dead remain under wraps, it is believed to follow Romero’s original film treatment.
The story is set on a tropical island in a decimated world where life has disappeared. It follows a woman and her child, believed to be among the last remaining human survivors, as they seek safety on a once-idyllic island now overtaken by nature and factions of the undead.
Twilight of the Dead is considered one of the most significant upcoming horror films, billed as the definitive conclusion to Romero’s zombie legacy, which began with the iconic 1968 film Night of the Living Dead.
Romero was known for revolutionizing the horror genre with stories that combined the undead with sharp social commentary, spawning a franchise that includes Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, and Survival of the Dead.
So far, there are no words yet on when Twilight of the Dead will be released.
