Turns Out Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Has the Lowest Profit of Disney’s Trilogy

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker might have had its fair share of commercial success when it premiered in December last year, however, the film easily became one of the most controversial entries in the Star Wars franchise. Bogged down by excessive fanservice, most fans found that Episode IX failed to offer a narrative that would properly culminate the Skywalker Saga.

Now, a new report by Deadline reveals just how costly The Rise of Skywalker was to Lucasfilm. According to the entertainment news outlet, the film earned the lowest profit among all of Disney's Star Wars entries.

Sure, Episode IX might have raked in more than $1 billion at the global box office when it completed its theatrical release, however, the film didn't really make that much profit. The House of Mouse spared no expense on the production of The Rise of Skywalker. The film was reportedly the most expensive entry in Disney's Star Wars sequel trilogy with its production cost arriving at $275 million and its total global cost arriving at $627 million.

At the end of the day, The Rise of Skywalker raked in a meager $300 million net profit – a number lower than Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a Star Wars spinoff movie which raked in a profit of $316. million.

The film earned much lower than Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Despite the controversy surrounding Rian Johnson's Star Wars entry, Episode VIII managed to bring in a $417.5 million profit (from a $578.3 million global production cost). Star Wars: The Force Awakens earned much, much more with its $780.11 million profit as well.

There are many reasons why The Rise of Skywalker failed. Did you enjoy the movie when it released? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.
