The Start of Tom Sturridge’s Career

According to his Wikipedia page, the now-36-year-old actor grew up in front of the camera, starting acting at the age of 11 in the 1996 TV adaptation of Gulliver’s Travels.

He was then again seen in Vanity Fair and Being Julia in 2004. After a year, he joined BBC4’s A Waste of Shame.

His next role was as Nigel in Like Minds, also known by the title Murderous Intent, in 2006. He then took one of the lead roles of Carl in the Richard Curtis comedy The Boat That Rocked, also known as Pirate Radio in the U.S., in 2009.

Come 2021, he was confirmed to play the role of Dream/Lord Morpheus in The Sandman and the comic book author Neil Gaiman himself said Tom Sturridge was the likeliest to be chosen for the part among the 1,500 actors who auditioned.

Meanwhile, talking about his preparations for his iconic role in The Sandman, Tom Sturridge told Digital Spy it took hard work and dedication before he managed to transform into Morpheus.

He also revealed the importance of his character’s physical aspect in the series.

He said,

"There’s so many aspects of his physicality that were important to me, simply because he doesn’t express himself traditionally, often. And so the way that he moves, I think, could be an enlightening way of how he can articulate himself.”

Tom Sturridge also wanted to build a body similar to the image in the comics. So, how did he do it?

He explained,

"As far as how difficult that was to achieve – it was in the sense that it required discipline and working out and not eating that much. But actually, acting is such an ephemeral job. We’re constantly trying to catch clouds when we go to work. To work out is really easy. Because you just do the six things they tell you to do, and it happens."
