Thor: The Dark World Almost Introduced Balder the Brave

Thor: The Dark World isn't a favorite for MCU fans, despite some great battles and a cool climax. It's often seen as one of the more generic films in the MCU and is often used by many as an example of the negative effects of the Marvel formula. However, some concept art for the movie has been revealed and it would have introduced one of the most important characters in the Thor lore; Balder the Brave.

Created by Walter Simonson and an Asgardian deity in his own right, Balder is one of the more beloved Asgardian characters. One of Thor's closest allies, the character was later revealed to be one of Odin's children during J. Michael Straczynski's legendary run for the character, making him the brother of Thor and Loki.

According to the concept artist, there were discussions to have Balder in the movie but no plot details were revealed. It seems like introducing Thor's other brother was scrapped so that they could focus on the generic dark elves instead, with MCU Malekith still being the worst MCU villain to date. At least his comic book counterpart is a great villain, mostly thanks to Jason Aaron's handling of the character.

Fans can check out Thor: The Dark World on Blu-Ray and digital services now. Thor: Ragnarok is also available on Blu-Ray and we're expecting to see the God of Thunder return in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
