This Avengers: Endgame Nugget Was Not Originally Going To Be Included In The Film

Unlike the previous Marvel Cinematic Universe films, Avengers: Endgame didn't have a post-credit scene, but it had something else.

After the credits rolled, we hear the sound of a hammer clanging against metal, which turned out to be the sound of Tony building his first Iron Man suit. Like that Tony Stark line in the final act of the film, this wasn't originally going to be included as well.

Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo revealed in an interview with USA Today that the Iron Man stinger was the idea of none other than Marvel president Kevin Feige himself. Joe Russo had this to say about the coda.

"It was never in the cards. It was called Endgame for a reason. This is it. This is the ending. The book is closed on that chapter of the Marvel universe and a new book will get written."

It was simply a way to pay homage to both Iron Man and Robert Downey Jr., who started what eventually become one of the biggest and most popular franchises of our time.

The interesting addition definitely got fans thinking. Marvel Studios usually tease what's to come in this sprawling universe after the events of the movie, so a lot of moviegoers assumed that maybe this was their way of saying that Iron Man is making a return.

However, it is the exact opposite. While at some point, it is totally possible that a new iteration of the beloved hero will be introduced in the MCU, this wasn't the setup for it. In fact, the Russos are relieved that they are leaving the wheel to such massive vehicle to someone else now. Anthony Russo had this to say:

This was the first Marvel movie we've done where we weren't thinking about the future. There's no future. There will be a future, of course, but it's not our responsibility.
