Summer Higgins is confined for a considerable period of time at the beginning of Yellowstone Season 5 for assault and civil disobedience. Piper Perabo's character is forced to stay under house arrest at Dutton Ranch.

Summer Higgins is Stuck at Dutton Ranch in Yellowstone Season 5

Summer finds herself placed under house arrest as soon as John Dutton takes office as governor. For the time being, she must reside at John's house.

“One thing I realized at the beginning of the season was when Summer gets out of prison, the only one there is John, and it’s not like John brings her to his house and she calls her folks or her friends,” Perabo shared in an interview with Variety.

“She doesn’t call anybody, she just starts living there on that ranch. And because of that, I went with this idea of the loneliness of Summer’s character.”

Piper Perabo On Summer’s Loneliness

In Yellowstone Season 5, Summer's situation is made worse by the fact that she lives with Beth Dutton, with whom she has a difficult relationship. But the two women eventually come to an understanding following a fistfight.

The entire season, Summer distinctly feels out of place. She confides in Beth that she is lost for what to do while John is away as they go to brand cattle. In order to learn something, Beth advises her to take a stroll around the property.

“Summer doesn’t really seem to have anybody else,” Perabo said. “John respects her, and so that gives her some standing, and she’s sort of friends with Gator. That’s about it. And so I think there’s a real desire for family that Summer can see.”

Becoming Family

Yellowstone frequently emphasizes themes of loyalty and "adoptive" family. Rip and Beth welcomed Carter into their house in Season 4 after Rip made a long-ago commitment to the Duttons.

Now, it appears it’s Summer’s turn in Yellowstone Season 5.

“As f***ed up as the Duttons are, everybody’s family is kind of f***ed up, and families are still the rock of a lot of things, even if it’s your chosen family and not your family of origin,” Perabo explained to Variety. “So I don’t think Summer wants to let go of what she’s found, because I’m not sure she has it anywhere else.”

Yellowstone Season 5 will return with new episodes in the summer of 2023.
