The Witcher Showrunner Explains Why Netflix Series Changed Sword of Destiny Subplot

There is little doubt that The Witcher has pleased fans with its catchy theme and breathtaking cinematography. However, some have also noticed that the Netflix series has changed a few things from the books. Luckily, Lauren S. Hissrich has offered a simple explanation of why certain changes needed to be made with a particular subplot.

A fan recently reached out to Hissrich on Twitter pointing out that changing the Sword of Destiny subplot didn't work out too well for the series. The Witcher showrunner immediately responded with a lengthy explanation of the matter. Take a look at her tweet below.

"I hear you. And we debated this intensely. Here's our rationale: to adapt the short stories that were important to world-building, and then to sequentially adapt Geralt and Ciri's multiple meetings in SoD meant that we wouldn't introduce Ciri until (at the earliest) season two," Hissrich wrote.

Hissrich's decision ensured that Ciri would play a larger role in the show's first season right away. She went on to explain that if the series was too faithful to the books, it would mean that the first season would have to focus on Geralt of Rivia alone. Basically, we would have been watching Geralt take on too many side quests in the first eight episodes alone.

Needless to say, the changes still worked for the show. We can't wait to see what's in store in The Witcher Season 2.

The first season of The Witcher is currently streaming on Netflix.
