The CW fantasy drama Legacies has already come to an end after four seasons. However, this leads to a lingering question about the possibility of continuing the story of The Vampire Diaries.
With that said, will another The Vampire Diaries spinoff be hitting the small screen? By the looks of it, just like the series’ immortal characters, it’s hard to kill a franchise as successful as this.
The Possibility of The Vampire Diaries Continuation
The Vampire Diaries franchise started running on CW in 2009. When the original show ended in 2017 after a successful eight-year run, its universe continued with its spinoff, The Originals, which began in 2013.
Though it ended just a year after the flagship show concluded, it wasn’t the end of the series yet. Legacies premiered in 2018.
Sure, it didn’t match the longevity of its parent show, but it held an 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
It followed the story of the 17-year-old Tribid Hope Mikaelson (Danielle Rose Russell), a descendant of a vampire, werewolf and witch bloodline.

She lived at the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted, simply known as the Salvatore School. However, after four seasons, the show was announced to be canceled.
According to Screenrant, the cancellation news wasn’t surprising at all. Rumors have it that it may have something to do with the network’s alleged sale and the show’s dwindling ratings.
Anyhow, despite the cancellation, it looks like the franchise will continue after executive producer Julie Plec reveals there’s more to come.
More The Vampire Diaries Stories Coming
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Plec hinted that there would be more stories to tell in The Vampire Diaries universe.
"We had a plan to keep the franchise on the air until the next installment, which exists in our brains, but not on the page yet," she said.
"There will be another one," she continued. "We're a little sad, we're going to take a beat, but yeah, there's more ideas. There's more to do."
However, she couldn’t deny that Legacies’ ending was bittersweet.

"What I felt in the moment was concern for the hundreds and hundreds of people who'd just lost their jobs across three of my shows," Plec added. "We did 331 episodes of television and a lot of people that worked on season 1 of Vampire Diaries worked on season 4 of Legacies.”
The franchise had created a beautiful family that they had built in Atlanta across the three shows.
“To think that that's just gone now is sad,” she stated.
What Would the New The Vampire Diaries Spinoff Be About?
As Plec seems to confirm a new The Vampire Diaries spinoff coming, it’s quite hard to predict what story it will tell next.
It also remains to be seen if any of the original characters will return, as some veteran cast members have already refused to return to the franchise.

However, Josep Morgan’s appearance in one episode of Legacies Season 4 opens a lot of possibilities. If not a new spinoff, there may also be a Legacies Season 5.
