I'll admit it, I had concerns about The Slime Diaries before it started airing earlier this month. A big part of the reason this series works so well is thanks in part to the battle scenes. While there's always an air of self-confidence that our slimy protagonist will always come out on top, the fantasy action is still a big selling point for the series. Would these bizarre but loveable characters be able to carry a slice-of-life series all on their own?

The answer to that question is a resounding yes!

Over the course of the first three episodes, The Slime Diaries has proven to be a weekly comedy treat in a season that is filled with emotionally heavy series (looking squarely at you To Your Eternity!). The Slime Diaries is a fantastic reminder that this entire franchise comprises genuinely likable characters that interact in such natural and fun ways that you sometimes forget that it's taking place in an isekai fantasy village far, far away.

The Slime Diaries has pulled off a feat that so few series can lay claim to… they built a real-world that is entirely three-dimensional. The characters in this series, even though they are monsters, feel real to us, which makes the audience want to see more of their daily lives and invest in what we're seeing despite there being no real stakes involved. That's talent, and I'm here for the whole ride!
