The Sandman: Tom Sturridge Credits Kirby Howell-Baptiste's Death for the Birth of Morpheus' Empathy

They always say that behind every great man is an even better woman. In Morpheus' case, this woman would be his sister Death. Tom Sturridge has just spoken about how the first season of The Sandman will explore Dream's struggle to live without his powers. In addition to that, the actor credited Kirby Howell-Baptiste's character for helping Morpheus discover his empathy.

Tom Sturridge recently spoke to Screenrant where he discussed Morpheus' story arc in the first season.

"I think a really important part of the story of our season is his discovery of that humanity," Sturridge said. "I think he doesn't necessarily begin the way that he ends. It's a quest. He is powerless at the beginning and he requires the help of humans to regain that power. In doing so, he listens to them."

He then points out how Kirby Howell-Baptiste's character helps Dream in empathizing with people. "His sister Death also educates him on how extraordinary it is to try and feel [for] someone who isn't you. And I think that's the birth of his empathy," Sturridge said.

Kirby Howell-Baptiste also spoke about how Death nurtures others and not just her brother Dream. "When we think of power, our idea of it is being dominating and forceful. But I think Death's power is quiet, humble, and self-assured. She is aware of what she can do," she said.

It's a beautiful way to speak about Death and it certainly sounds like Howell-Baptiste did her homework. Needless to say, we can't wait to meet Death next month.

The Sandman also stars Gwendoline Christie, Vivienne Acheampong, Boyd Holbrook, Charles Dance, Jenna Coleman, Mason Alexander Park, Joely Richardson, and David Thewlis. The highly anticipated series will premiere on Netflix on August 5, 2022.
