The Rise of Skywalker: The Y-Wing in the Film is Confirmed to be an Upgraded Model

If you know your Star Wars lore, you'll know that the Y-Wings are actually an outdated ship at the time of A New Hope, so it's weird that they should suddenly be back for The Rise of Skywalker which takes place 30 years into the future of the original trilogy. Thanks to some new info, it's been revealed that this Y-Wing is actually a newer model designed for that era.

StarWars.com just released these "blueprints":

As it turns out, the Y-Wing had reached an iconic status thanks to the Rebellion, and the manufacturing company who made the ship decided to make the upgrade look the OT-era Y-Wing on purpose. What's more, this ship is said to be more customizable–hence why the Y-Wing in the movie is being used by mercenary Zorri Bliss, who's probably fitted it to her personal needs.

If anything, these expanded lore books help explain some "plotholes" in the main films. Personally, I thought Lucasfilm just wanted another familiar ship in the movie, and it was up to the writers like Pablo Hidalgo to make up reasons why that would make sense.

I would be fine accepting the reason that Zorri was driving an old Y-Wing, but I guess that doesn't make her sound formidable lore-wise if she's in a Clone Wars era ship.

Despite the older models, I hope The Rise of Skywalker gives us some new starfighters as well. I loved the "T-Wings" in The Last Jedi, and I hope we get more ships in the spotlight in the final film in the saga.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker comes out on Dec. 20.
