The Rise of Skywalker has Now Grossed More Than a Billion in the Box Office

A lot of people were worried that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker would underperform, given the terrible critics' reviews it's been getting since it came out. As it turns out, the movie is doing alright by Star Wars standards and has surpassed the $1 billion mark at the box office.

According to Variety, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker now has a worldwide gross of $1.001 billion; the film has made $481 million at the domestic box office with $519 earned internationally.

If anything, The Rise of Skywalker is far from the worst performer when it comes to box office profits. Almost all Disney-era Star Wars films had earned more than a billion worldwide. The lowest-earning is definitely Ron Howard's Solo: A Star Wars Story at $392.9 million; but even that had a story that fans could at least get behind. Until now there's still a #MakeSolo2Happen campaign online.

Personally I was not a fan of The Rise of Skywalker, but if kids were able to enjoy the film, then I guess it wasn't so bad. I just kind of hate the retcon that Rey is powerful because she's a Palpatine and not because the Force just chose her. You'd think everyone would be sick of ‘chosen one' stories by now.

After The Rise of Skywalker, Lucasfilm is set to take a hiatus from theatrically released Star Wars films. The next big movie is going to come out in 2022, but we're still going to get some Disney+ entries while we wait.

For now, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is now in theaters.
