The Mandalorian and Grogu opened to modest box office numbers in its first weekend. What does it all mean about the future of the Star Wars franchise?

The new film marks the return of Star Wars on the big screen after seven years of absence, and it's also the first time that the titular characters are featured in a theatrical project. With the box office so far not as splashy as the sequel trilogy movies, there are questions about whether this will affect the franchise's future.

Variety reported that The Mandalorian and Grogu opened with $82 million at the box office in its debut weekend, and an estimated $102 million for the entire four-day weekend. It is the lowest among the Disney-era Star Wars movies.

This is slightly lower than the opening weekend box office of Solo: A Star Wars Story, which brought in $84 million, with its total rising to $103 million by the end of the Memorial Day holiday in 2018.

However, worldwide, the new film grossed $165 million.

Considering that the film had a production budget of $165 million, which is lower than that of previous Disney-era movies, the box office numbers are already considered a win, and it won't be a massive disappointment like Solo. However, it is still seen as modest in Star Wars standards.

With the not-so-strong performance, some fans are wondering what it all means for the future of the Star Wars franchise.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, citing sources inside Disney, the film's success isn't measured solely by ticket sales. Rather, its ability to drive merchandise revenue, theme park interest, and streaming growth takes priority. Consequently, a box office return of $500 million to $600 million would be considered a win for the studio.

Even if The Mandalorian and Grogu doesn't reach $1 billion, if it manages to gross half of that, it will still be a win for the studio, and it won't be considered as a "franchise killer," so the future of Star Wars in its new theatrical era is still promising.
