The Last of Us Showrunners Won’t Repeat Game of Thrones’ Mistake

Let’s face it. No matter how massively iconic Game of Thrones became, Season 8 went downhill upon years and seasons of building on who gets to sit on the Iron Throne and rule the entirety of Westeros. Luckily, The Last of Us, which will also be on the same streaming site HBO, will not be repeating the mistake, as reassured by the showrunners themselves.

One of the most highly anticipated features The Last of Us has is the fact that the showrunners also previously promised a direct, game-accurate adaptation towards the TV series. Showrunner Craig Mazin even seemingly confirmed they plan on expounding the whole storyline of The Last of Us Part I in Season 1, with The Last of Us Part II in Season 2. Seeing as they already planned out everything along with video game co-creator Neil Druckmann, there should be no problem for the fans given they’re locked in on the original plotline.

Recently speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Last of Us showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin detail in what direction they plan to go with the adaptation apart from the game-accurate scenes. Both creators admit they do not plan on repeating what Game of Thrones Season 8 did, which was to continue the story ahead of its original source. In the case of Naughty Dog’s game, The Last of Us Parts I and II have already been developed. Check out their full comments below:

“We have no plans to tell any stories beyond adapting the games,” Druckmann says, “We won’t run into the same issue as Game of Thrones since Part II doesn’t end on a cliffhanger.”

Mazin adds that, “I don’t have any interest in a spinning-plates-go-on-forever show. When it becomes a perpetual motion machine, it just can’t help but get kind of…stupid. Endings mean everything to me.”

The Last of Us is set to premiere on HBO on January 15, 2023.
