While a good chunk of the fanbase still hasn't forgiven Rian Johnson for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, I'm part of the camp that believes he actually gets what the franchise is all about. While fans also like to bash on the Prequel Trilogy, Johnson has taken to Twitter to explain precisely why those movies are great.
Replying to a thread which asks what's genuinely nice about the prequels, Johnson wrote:
Lucas made a gorgeous 7-hour long movie for children about how entitlement and fear of loss turns good people into fascists and did it while spearheading nearly every technical sea change in modern filmmaking of the past 30 years.
No one else could have said it better. While the prequel fans have mostly grown to be adults now, Johnson makes it clear that the primary audience for every Star Wars film, even the Sequels, are kids. While the adults like to bash on the ST, we'll just have to wait a few more years before the kids who are fans to be more vocal about their appreciation. Let's just hope they have the maturity to embrace whatever Star Wars franchise is coming out at that time.
As for technical achievements, George Lucas has definitely paved the way for modern visual effects with the prequels. Let's not forget that it was Jar Jar who walked before Gollum could run. Even today Lucasfilm is still breaking boundaries with their new tech on The Mandalorian.
We don't know when Johnson will be working on Star Wars again, but I'm still crossing my fingers he gets his own trilogy. I would even settle for just an episode of The Mandalorian.
