The hit Netflix series The Diplomat is set to premiere its highly-anticipated season 2 this week. However, it will have a lesser number of episodes than usual.
You might be wondering how many episodes it will have for the new season and why it is getting fewer than what we've anticipated. Let's explore its short episode count below.
How Many Episodes Will The Diplomat Season 2 Have?
The Diplomat season 2 will only consist of six (6) episodes when it premieres on Netflix this October 31.
The episode count is shorter than the first season which had 8 episodes, the usual count that we've been seeing in a streaming show.
Despite its shortened season, it will still be an exciting new chapter for the series as it will introduce the US vice president Grace Penn (played by Oscar and Emmy winner Allison Janney).
"
The VP thinks Kate’s after her job. She’s not entirely wrong. Kate thinks she understands the VP. She is mistaken," showrunner Debora Cahn explained to Tudum.
It will also address the aftermath of the explosive cliffhanger of the season 1 finale where Hal and Hayford were caught up in a car bomb that left Kate devastated.
Why The Diplomat Season 2 Only Has Six Episodes
In an interview, Cahn opened up about her decision to only do six episodes of the new season.
She revealed that it was her decision, not a mandate from the executives of Netflix as they wanted it to have eight episodes as well.
"It was my decision. [Netflix] was not happy. They wanted the full eight," the showrunner explained.
"I was really tired. It was a time thing. It felt like there wasn’t enough time to turn around eight of them. It was a lot to do in what appeared to be a short period of time."
Cahn added, "Had we known it was going to be a year and a half before we got back on the air, it would’ve been different."
Fortunately, despite the surprisingly short episode count for season 2, the showrunner has confirmed that season 3 will go back to the usual 8-episode count.
