The year 2024 saw the release of many great films that were acclaimed and box-office hits. However, some of them also became the biggest cinematic flops.
Here are the 2024 films that became major flops at the box office.
Argylle
Despite having a star-studded A-list cast, the spy comedy Argylle ended up becoming a massive box office flop.
With a reported budget of $200 million, the film only grossed $96.2 million at the worldwide box office. It was supposed to be the start of a new franchise, but based on the results, that looks to be unlikely now.
Madame Web
The first of the three Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU) films that were released this year, Madame Web was a disappointment both critically and financially.
The film ended up grossing around $100 million at the worldwide box office against a reported production budget of $80-100 million. It was panned by the critics as it has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 11% and became a subject of ridicule by fans online through memes.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare
The Guy Ritchie World War II action film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare massively underperformed at the box office despite getting solid reviews from critics and bolstering an impressive cast of known actors led by Henry Cavill.
The film ended up only grossing around $27.3 million against a reported budget of $60 million. Unfortunately, it is also the second film in a row starring Cavill that flopped at the box office.
The Fall Guy
Despite getting great reviews from critics and a cast led by the stars of "Barbenheimer," The Fall Guy ended up underperforming at the box office.
With a reported budget of $125-150 million, the film ended up grossing around $181.1 million. While it has better results than the other entries in this list, it's still considered to be a disappointment as it failed to break even.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga received positive reviews from critics and called it a worthy prequel to Fury Road, but it was not enough to turn it into a box office sensation.
The film ended up grossing $173.8 million worldwide against a reported budget of $168 million, which is nowhere near the level of Fury Road. Its disappointing performance may have put the nail in the coffin of the future of the Mad Max franchise.
Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1
Kevin Costner's first installment in his four-part epic western saga, Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1, ended up as a major box office disappointment.
With a reported budget of $50 million, it only grossed around $38 million worldwide and put the future of the planned four-part saga in question. Chapter 2 was slated to be released six weeks later, but it was removed from the release calendar with no new date still set.
Fly Me to the Moon
Despite being led by A-listers Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, the period romantic comedy Fly Me to the Moon was a massive box office failure.
The film had a reported budget of $100 million, but it only ended up grossing $42 million worldwide. It did not help that it received mixed reviews from critics which may not have encouraged audiences to watch it in theaters.
Harold and the Purple Crayon
Harold and the Purple Crayon may have been based on a best-selling children's book, but it was not enough to attract the family audience to watch it in theaters.
With a reported budget of $40 million, the film only grossed $32 million worldwide. Its leading star Zachary Levi has also become a controversial figure and it did not help the critics slammed the film as well.
Borderlands
Despite being an adaptation of a beloved video game franchise, Borderlands was a massive flop when it was released in theaters during the late summer period.
The film's star-studded cast led by Oscar winner Cate Blanchett was also not enough to save it from being a major disappointment. With a reported budget of $110-120 million, it only grossed $33 million worldwide.
Transformers One
Despite the popularity of the franchise, Transformers One ended up underperforming at the box office even with the positive word-of-mouth that it received during release.
The film had a reported budget of $75-147 million, but it only ended up grossing $129 million worldwide. It was nowhere near the level of the box office performance of any live-action Transformers film.
Megalopolis
Francis Ford Coppola's comeback film Megalopolis was one of the major box office flops this year despite bolstering a star-studded ensemble and being helmed by one of the greatest directors of all time.
With a reported budget of $120-136 million (which is self-financed by Coppola himself), the film only grossed $13.9 million worldwide. It did not help that the critics' reviews were polarizing as some of them praised Coppola's achievement while some panned it all throughout.
Joker: Folie à Deux
Despite the first film's impressive billion-dollar box office success and Oscar wins, the reception of Joker: Folie à Deux was the complete opposite both critically and financially.
The sequel only grossed $206.4 million against a massive budget of $190-200 million. Critics and audiences were also divided, especially on the musical elements.
Here
Robert Zemeckis' new film Here was marked as a reunion project between the filmmaker, Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, and other crew members after working together in Forrest Gump three decades ago.
However, its success was not replicated when it came to Here, as it flopped at the box office. It only grossed $13.4 million against the reported budget of $45-50 million.
Kraven the Hunter
The new SSU film Kraven the Hunter recently arrived in theaters, but it was already a massive box office flop as it had a disappointing opening weekend and overwhelmingly negative reviews.
As of the writing of this article, the film has grossed $30 million worldwide against a budget of $110-130 million. It also marked the end of the franchise (for now) as Sony has no plans to continue with more SSU installments.
