Stuart Fails to Save the Universe follows Stuart Bloom as he tries to restore reality after breaking a device built by his The Big Bang Theory friends Sheldon and Leonard, which triggers a multiverse apocalypse.

This time, Stuart steps into a leadership role–but “he’s not very good at it.” The series leans into his repeated failures each week, adding a comedic twist to his attempts to fix the chaos.

“I do my best, but really, I’m way out of my comfort zone,” Kevin Sussman said about his character.

Viewers will also see the continuation of Stuart’s budding romance with Denise, which was just beginning as The Big Bang Theory ended.

It was in April 2023 when a yet-to-be-titled The Big Bang Theory spinoff was announced in early development at HBO Max, created by the mothership show’s co-creator and executive producer, Chuck Lorre.

HBO and Max CEO and chairman Casey Bloys later formally announced the project at the 2023 Warner Bros. Discovery upfront presentation, revealing a new cast along with former The Big Bang Theory cast members set to appear in guest roles.

According to Lorre, it would be a “science fiction action-adventure comedy.”

“I just wanted to do something that challenged me, that I was uncomfortable and in unfamiliar territory, and the special effects stuff, the computer graphics, all those things,” he said. “Most of my career has been two people sitting on a couch and talking.”

After production began in September 2025 and wrapped in February 2026, it was revealed at the Stuart Fails to Save the Universe panel at CCXP Mexico City that the series is set to premiere in July 2026 on HBO Max.
