The production for The Batman has yet to start but Matt Reeves already has his next project after the Robert Pattinson film. Reeves and Netflix have just procured the rights to adapt the science fiction novel Way Station.
The announcement was made by Netflix through a press release confirming that the streaming giant will be working with Reeves' 6th & Idaho production company on the new feature film. The movie will be based on Clifford D. Simak's 1963 book.
The premise of Way Station reads as follows:
"For more than 100 years Enoch Wallace has been the keeper of a Way Station on Earth for intergalactic alien travelers as they teleport across the universe. But the gifts of knowledge and immortality that his intergalactic guests have bestowed upon him are proving to be a nightmarish burden, for they have opened Enoch's eyes to humanity's impending destruction. Still, one final hope remains for the human race."
It sounds like Reeves is going back to his science fiction roots and we can't think of a better filmmaker to bring Way Station to life. After all, he's done an impressive job on Cloverfield and the two sequels Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes. An adaptation of a Hugo Award winner seems like the perfect follow-up project after The Batman.
For now, Way Station is in the early stages of development. Which is understandable since Reeves has a huge movie to work on. The Batman is currently scheduled for release on June 25, 2021.
