The Batman Nabs Impressive Box Office Records During Its Domestic Opening Weekend

Matt Reeves' The Batman is now upon us and it has received mostly positive responses from both critics and the audience and is a subject of conversation for the fandom. Of course, the most important result that the studio is looking in is the box office and, fortunately, the film has earned a very impressive $128.5 million (at least as of the writing of this article) for its domestic opening weekend easily earning the number one spot.

According to Deadline, with the film getting the domestic box office opening weekend of $128.5 million, it has nabbed several box office records. The Batman is now Warner. Bros' best opening during the pandemic, which is expected since all but one of their films prior were released in both theaters and HBO Max simultaneously. It is also the best opening of Reeves, surpassing Dawn of the Planet of the Apes which had a domestic opening weekend of $73 million.

In addition, the film is now currently the best domestic opening weekend so far this 2022 and the first one to reach more than $100 million. Given that it's a comic book movie, it's not surprising that it was able to reach 9-figures. It is also the second-highest opening during the pandemic, following Spider-Man: No Way Home which earned $260 million.

It's very impressive that The Batman was able to earn the aforementioned box office records given the circumstances. First, the film is three hours which might have turned off some of the audience. Second, it is a new iteration of the titular hero that is still untested with some even still skeptic about the casting of Robert Pattinson. Third, we are obviously still in the pandemic although cases are declining and the movie-goers are slowly going back to theaters.

The numbers are also beyond projection which was between $80 to 120 million. There are a lot of factors to consider regarding why the film won't be able to reach as high as $150 million which is fine since $128.5 million is already very impressive enough. Plus the film is not expected to reach the numbers of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which had high anticipation and strong buzz prior to release due to the rumors and speculations.

The numbers basically show that there a lot of the audience who went to the theaters to watch the film and there's no doubt that the studio will call it a huge win for them. Since there are no other tentpole films that will be released until Morbius on April 1, the film should be able to sustain its momentum at the box office and word-of-mouth will help its longevity.
