Earlier today, word came out that Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi was reportedly being considered by Lucasfilm to develop the studio's next Star Wars movie.
The report came as a welcome surprise to the Star Wars fanbase. There's been a lot of uncertainty over the future of the Star Wars franchise ever since Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss decided to leave their highly anticipated Star Wars trilogy, the first entry of which was supposed to release in December 2022.
However, while Star Wars fans are eager to see the well-loved New Zealand filmmaker take the director's seat of Lucasfilm's next Star Wars movie, The Hollywood Reporter's initial reveal doesn't really indicate how long Waititi might be involved with the project.
This could threaten the director's other projects. Right now, Waititi is attached to work on Marvel's fourth Thor movie, Love and Thunder. Not only are fans excited to see Waititi returning behind the camera for the Thor film franchise, but they're also excited to see Natalie Portman's Jane Foster take on the role of Mighty Thor in Love and Thunder.
Waititi is also set to direct Warner Brother's live-action adaptation of Akira, the beloved animated classic that's influenced so many other films in the animated movie industry.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Waititi's involvement with Lucasfilm could very well impact these two projects. It would be difficult for the filmmaker to juggle these three major projects at the same time.
For now, we can only hope that Star Wars will give Waititi the time that he needs to develop his new Star Wars movie and to work on the other projects that he's been tasked to make. Crossing our fingers.
