Taika Waititi truly felt like a breath of fresh air when he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe to direct 2017's Thor: Ragnarok. After the first two films failed to click with audiences, Waititi injected the God of Thunder with a little camp and humor which unsurprisingly worked given his comic book origin.

Naturally, this allowed the director free rein when he worked on Thor: Love and Thunder but evidently, Taika took things up a notch and went overboard with the film's hilarity. Unfortunately, it led to the film generating mixed reception from the fandom although the Thorquel performed well at the box office.

As it stands, we still don't know what the future holds for the worthy one and even Taika himself has stated in previous interviews that Thor 5 is still years away. However, it looks like the director's MCU career could be in jeopardy following the polarizing reactions to Love and Thunder and according to a new rumor, Waititi won't be returning to helm Thor's next big screen adventure.

The good folks over at Giant Freakin Robot reports that Marvel Studios has dropped Taika from the project which is said to already be in development. Key details about the director's exit were not disclosed but the outlet claims that it has something to do with the MCU blockbuster's critical performance.

Of course, it's just a rumor for now so take it with a grain of salt. Personally, I think Marvel Studios will give Taika another chance but this time around, I wouldn't be surprised if Kevin Feige and company will be more involved with the film's production.

Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled to hit Disney+ on September 8, 2022.
