Taika Waititi made his debut in the galaxy far, far away by directing the last episode of the first season of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and also providing the voice of IG-11. The episode was generally received well by the fans and it seems like this is only the first step in his Star Wars journey.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Waititi has been "approached" to develop a Star Wars movie. The outlet says it isn't clear as to "where things stand" in those talks, and that it's not certain whether the said project would be separate from the one being developed by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. However, Disney and Lucasfilm had no comment about the report.
When the reports got around, Waititi took to Twitter to share a picture of an album cover of Fleetwood Mac's Rumors, seemingly indicating that these reports are just hearsays.
Given the success of his The Mandalorian episode, as well as his blockbuster movies, six Oscar nominations, and essentially, being one of the most in-demand directors in the industry, it wouldn't be surprising if Waititi would direct a Star Wars movie in the future.
That being said, he already has a lot of projects on his plate including his next film titled Next Goal Wins, as well as being included in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, and his highly-anticipated Thor sequel, Love and Thunder.
Fans are yet to discover the details regarding the future of the Star Wars franchise, but it is known that there are projects slated for 2022, 2024, and 2026. In addition, an Obi-Wan Kenobi series, as well as a Rogue One prequel series will also be developed under Disney+.
For now, it isn't confirmed whether this report is true. Regardless, fans are pretty much excited to see Waititi's take on a Star Wars film. In the meantime, you can look out for the second season of The Mandalorian which is set for release later this year.
