We'll talk about the different monsters in the series and how a person turns into one. If you haven't watched Sweet Home Season 1 and Season 2, be warned. This article contains spoilers so you might need to skip this until you've watched the show.
How Did Monsterization Start in Sweet Home?
One of the pressing questions that people have about Sweet Home is how the monster apocalypse started.
Unfortunately, there is no clear explanation as to how the monster apocalypse started. We're hoping that Sweet Home Season 2 will shed light and give us more information, especially since Seo Yi-kyung (played by Lee Si-young) was able to discover her fiance's notes. It's possible that the history of the virus is detailed in this.
As for how the virus spread, however, it was revealed that people got infected when they were scratched or bit. Eventually, monsterization happens when people give into their desires.
We also saw Cha Hyun-soo (played by Song Kang) tell the supermarket man to "get a grip on your mind." This suggests that the infected should control their desires instead of being overpowered by them.
What is the Golden Hour?
The Golden Hour refers to the period of time when an infected person gradually turns into a monster. The earliest manifestation of infection is the sudden onset of a bloody nose followed by a fainting spell. The infected also start having auditory hallucinations, which manipulate them to reveal and give in to what they truly desire.
Fortunately, strong-willed humans who manage to understand what the entity is trying to accomplish can delay complete monsterization. This also works on people with split personalities since the entity can only control one at a time.
People can still revert back into humans as long as they have not completely monsterized yet. Once they turn, however, their psyches get locked in a dream world. They stay stuck in this place until their desires have been satisfied.
While in the golden hour period, the infected do not have the full ability to regenerate. This is why this is the best period for humans to kill them.
Why Are There Good Monsters?
An individual's desires is what helps transform them into a monster. What this means is that if the infected individual desires something that could harm others, there's no stopping them from doing so.
Meanwhile, those who have turned into a monster but avoid hurting humans have a desire to help others too.
This is the simplest information on why there are good and bad monsters in Sweet Home.
The monsters in Sweet Home are more complicated than the regular zombies you'd find in other shows who only want to feed on brains. But we're more than eager to learn more about the monsters in this show.

Sweet Home Monsters Explained: Season 2's Monsters
In the second season, things get a little complicated for the monsterization. It turns out that the monsters in the second season are starting to evolve. Although the process remains the same for most infected humans, the season introduces us to a new breed of monsters.
As discovered by Dr. Lim (played by Oh Jung-se), one of the infectees do not show the usual symptoms. Jun-il (played by Kim Dong-young) did not have the usual symptoms of a nosebleed, hallucinations, and a fainting spell.
After meeting his infected mother, he tries to kill her. In the process, he also explodes for no reason.
It's possible that Jun-il is a different type of monster since he instantly became one after being touched by Ah-yi, Yi-kyung's daughter.
What is Yi-kyung's Daughter, Ah-yi?
As we learned in the first season, Yi-kyung was actually carrying her fiance's baby.
When she makes her way into the lab, she finds her fiance's lifeless body. As she cries, her stomach starts ballooning and shortly after, she gives birth to a monster baby.
At first, she wants to kill the baby since she was scared of what it was. She knows that it's not an ordinary human, given the rate it grew in her belly and in the outside world.
She leaves the baby with Hyun-soo, who raises Ah-yi (played by Kim Si-a) like a sister. When Yi-kyung finally returns after a year, the child has become a little girl.
She witnesses some humans chasing her daughter and shooting at her. When they manage to put a bullet on her back, Ah-yi transforms into a teenager. She then holds one of the men, who instantly turn around and attack the others.
It's clear that Ah-yi is gifted and has the ability to control other monsters. She turns Yi-kyung into a monster at the end of season 2. It is also revealed that her father, Nam Sang-won is actually one of the first monsters who was experimented upon by Dr. Lim.
Another revelation is that Sang-won has the ability to take over other people, which explains who Ui Myeong is all this time.
It'll be interesting to see how Sang-won and Hyu-soo battle each other in the third season, especially since both are involved in Ah-yi's existence.
