Stranger Things Creators Want to Do a VHS Version of the Series

One of the appeals of Stranger Things is its nostalgic trip to the 80s as we see their attention-to-detail recreation of pop culture during the decade whether it's the hairstyle, fashion, music, movie references, or any other trends of the time. Now, it looks like the series will push the nostalgia to the next level as we might see it in the style of a VHS, one of the staples in the 80s and 90s.

In a recent interview with Collider, The Duffer Brothers were asked if they have plans to release the series in 4K Blu-ray to which they revealed that they have other ideas in terms of its potential home video release as they are eyeing to do a pan and scan version of the series.

"I want to do a VHS. I want a pan and scan version, of at least Season 1. I just want to try to pan and scan it," Ross Duffer said. "Skip the VCR, hit it a couple of times, put it on Netflix. At least the nerd in me loves it, the nostalgic factor. We had our colorist do the opening scene of Season 1 pan and scan for us."

In case you're not familiar, pan and scan is the method used to convert a movie from the theatrical aspect ratio to a smaller aspect ratio that is suitable for home viewing on smaller TV screens. This was mostly used for the VHS releases of films back in the day since there were no widescreen TVs that exist at that time.

Matt Duffer clarified that the potential pan and scan version will not replace the current format of the series and it will be a separate release. "[I]t wouldn't be embedded, it'd be its own separate thing. Like Stranger Things VHS, whatever it is. I'm excited about it, we'll see if it happens," he said.

It would be interesting to see the series in a VHS-type format since it will be suitable for its 80s setting and style where it was the dominant home video format in households during that day. This will also be a different way to experience the series and it will be similar to the way people watch it during the 80s. Let's just wait and see whether the plans will come to fruition.
