Stranger Things Creators Break Silence on Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill Success

Aside from Stranger Things Season 4's triumphant viewership records on a global scale, the latest season also gave Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill a reinvented success. Even a month after, Bush's 1985 hit is still #1 in Itunes Top 100 (via PopVortex), while Metalica's 1986 track Master of Puppets — which was featured in Volume Two rises at the second spot.

In a recent interview with Collider, Matt and Ross Duffer discuss Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill reinvented success after its inclusion in Stranger Things Season 4. According to Matt Duffer, the song's triumph was bizarre but clarified that they won't attempt to recreate the milestone in Stranger Things Season 5.

"'The 'Running up that Hill,' the Kate Bush thing, [is] so bizarre," Matt said. "I'm not on TikTok, but people are like, 'Oh, it's all over TikTok!' I don't even really understand what that means, but it's just bizarre how that stuff happens."

"Whether it happens again with another band, I don't know," Matt added. "It's certainly the type of thing you're not going to, in Season 5, attempt to replicate. I'm already getting asked that question, it's like, 'What song are [you] going to do in Season 5?' I'm like, 'We're not going to do that again.' Because if we do it, it will fail."

Since Stranger Things was set in the 80s, these 80s tracks certainly give nostalgia to the audience. However, the Duffer Brothers' decision not to recreate what they did to Kate Bush's 80s song might point to the show's impending finale. That said, the Duffers are now fully dedicated to plotting the show's monumental conclusion, and the soundtrack is not just their top priority. Yet, who knows? Surely, the Duffer Bros. didn't really anticipate that Running Up That Hill would blow up like that, and they can absolutely unintentionally recreate it in the final season, considering Stranger Things' constantly expanding influence.

All episodes of Stranger Things Season 4 are available to stream on Netflix.
