Star Wars Writer Says 'Rey Skywalker' is the Ultimate Victory Against Palpatine

Star Wars fans might have had mixed feelings about Rey (Daisy Ridley) deciding to take the name Skywalker during the final act of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, however, Rae Carson believes that the birth of Rey Skywalker is the Resistance's ultimate victory over Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid).

StarWars.com just recently went on an interview with Rae Carson, the author of the novelization of The Rise of Skywalker, and during their discussion with the writer, the people behind the official Star Wars website couldn't help but ask about Rey's decision to take on the Skywalker name.

Carson was asked about how that Rey Skywalker moment impacted the Jakku Orphans journey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and while the writer understands why Rey Skywalker wasn't that well received by fans, she sees one positive thing about the name-taking.

To Carson, Rey's new birth as Rey Skywalker was "the Skywalkers' ultimate victory."

"I recognize that Rey's decision proved controversial, and I look forward to discussing this with fans for years to come. But my current take is this: The entire Skywalker saga is about Palpatine turning or trying to turn Skywalkers to the dark side," the writer explains, "He especially hopes that Rey will prove a worthy vessel for his own power and ambition and become the Skywalkers' final downfall. But in spite of all his efforts over the course of three generations, he fails. Rey rejects everything about him and takes on the Skywalker mantle and legacy. In the end, it's a Palpatine who turns to the light, thus handing the Skywalkers their ultimate victory."

Carsons response echoes the answer that Chris Terrio and J.J. Abrams have given fans when met with backlash against the whole "Rey Skywalker" scene in Episode IX. While we doubt that this explanation might assuage fans against "Rey Skywalker," the idea of seeing a Palpatine turning to the light does seem rather idealistic.

The Rise of Skywalker has certainly been a controversial entry in Disney's sequel trilogy. While there are fans that enjoyed the film, many others complained that the film tried too hard to pander to angry fanboys than to tell a proper story.
