Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Writer on How the Truth of Rey's Parents Was Handled

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will go down as one of the most polarizing films in the franchise, even more so than The Last Jedi since this installment barely improves on what its predecessor built and just tries to retcon everything to please fans. While far from horrible, this is a movie that will go down as a mixed bag for trying way too hard to please the fans, especially when it comes to one talking point; Rey Palpatine.

During an interview with GQ, The Rise of Skywalker co-writer Chris Terrio felt that there was just more to Rey's parents than what was revealed in The Last Jedi. Since The Last Jedi is set right after The Force Awakens and takes place in a few days, Terrio felt there was more material to be explored, believing that there was no way Kylo Ren could immediately know about her parentage.

Here's what Terrio had to say:

Well, we weren't convinced that it had been cleared up, because there's still this highly troubling vision that Rey had in Episode VII, which is the shop with her parents leaving the planet. Also, the events of The Last Jedi are literally just after the events of Episode VII—within 48 hours, Rey has had a force-back to her parents and then the very next day is told ‘your parents were no one and they were junk traders. None of that matters.' And we thought in a way that would be too easy because of the idea that Rey had been longing for her parents for so many years. We just felt like there was something more going on.

Terrio does sound pretty convincing and had the movie been better, this argument might have some credibility to it. Unfortunately, the sidelining of Kelly Marie Tran's Rose Tico and the forced inclusion of the late Carrie Fisher in certain scenes left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths. It's not a horrible movie and is better than every prequel film but is arguably the worst "good" Star Wars film.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is now showing in theaters.
