Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Might Have The Lowest Opening In Sequel Trilogy

There is little doubt that people have high expectations of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. After all, it's the final film in the Skywalker Saga. However, it seems like the highly anticipated movie could end up having the lowest opening box office haul in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

A new report from Box Office Pro has provided some estimates for The Rise of Skywalker, which is currently expected to bring in between $185 – 225 million on its opening weekend.

Sure, those are big numbers but it's important to remember that Star Wars: The Force Awakens set a new opening weekend record with $248 million in 2015. Nevertheless, there is hope that The Rise of Skywalker will surprise fans later this year.

It was previously reported that The Rise of Skywalker had already broken the record set by Avengers: Endgame in pre-selling its tickets. In addition to that, fans are expecting to see a truly amazing conclusion to the sequel trilogy as well as the Skywalker Saga. With that in mind, there is a huge chance that Episode IX will perform better than what is being projected.

There have been speculations that director J.J. Abrams decided to bring back Emperor Sheev Palpatine in an effort to win back fans of the original trilogy. However, it has since been revealed that the villain's return has been planned even before the Star Wars: The Last Jedi backlash. Either way, we're looking forward to an epic movie that will set the tone for the future of the franchise.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20.
