It might be the last film in the Skywalker Saga but Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker isn't exactly a huge hit with Chinese fans. A new report reveals that Episode IX isn't earning as much as Disney and Lucasfilm have hoped for.
According to Variety, The Rise of Skywalker has only made $2.2 million in China. At the time of the report, the film is in fourth place behind three Chinese movies. Interestingly, Rogue One star Donnie Yen's Ip Man 4: The Finale is selling more tickets and is at the top spot with $10.3 million. It is followed by the crime thriller Sheep Without A Shepherd with $4.57 million and the romance flick Only Cloud Knows has placed third with $2.57 million.
It's a surprising result considering that Disney and Lucasfilm were hoping to dominate the Chinese box office with The Rise of Skywalker. However, it looks like people are more interested in the conclusion of the Ip Man film series than how the Skywalker Saga will end. Hopefully, things will change for Episode IX during the weekend.
This isn't the first snap that The Rise of Skywalker has encountered this week. It was previously reported that the theatrical cut that screened in Dubai opted to censor the same-sex kiss that is featured in the film. Interestingly. China had chosen not to remove the same scene.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is currently screening in theaters worldwide.
