Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Crushed by IP Man 4 at Chinese Box Office

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker might be one of the biggest films of the year, but it looks like the third and final entry in Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy continues to struggle in China.

Episode IX opened very poorly in the Chinese market, raking in only $2.2 million during its premiere in the East Asian country. Now, according to a report by Variety, the movie continues to struggle in the foreign market, finding itself beaten out by Ip Man 4: The Finale, a movie made in China starring the Ip Man lead star Donnie Yen, an actor who also happens to appear in the Star Wars spinoff movie, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

It might not seem like a surprise to see The Rise of Skywalker doing so terribly in China ( the Chinese market has never been too keen on the Star Wars franchise given the cultural differences between the East and West), however, fans should understand that the East Asian country remains as one of Hollywoods major markets.

Episode IX only gathered a slow $2 million during its opening weekend, making up only 3% of the film's theatrical screenings. Ip Man 4, on the other hand, is doing very well for itself, gathering $97.6 million at the Chinese box office. That's five times than what The Rise of Skywalker is making in the foreign market.

Still, despite this issue, The Rise of Skywalker seems to be doing well for itself, gathering over $725 million at the global box office during its second weekend.
