Star Wars: The Mandalorian Reveals IG-11's Surprising Connection to A New Hope

We already know that IG-11 is based on IG-88, the assassin droid that was one of the bounty hunters that appeared in The Empire Strikes Back. However, it looks like the droid that became an important character in The Mandalorian has more connections to the Star Wars original trilogy. The new trailer for The Mandalorian documentary series has confirmed that IG-11 is connected to A New Hope.

In the new trailer for Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian, it was revealed that the new docuseries will provide an in-depth look at the first season of the Disney+ show. One of the interesting things that were confirmed in the teaser was the inspiration behind IG-11. Showrunner Jon Favreau stated that the droid was just like IG-88. However, it was director Dave Filoni who dropped unexpected details about the assassin droid-turned-Baby Yoda caretaker.

"They built him out of parts of the old Cantina set from A New Hope," Filoni shared. He also stated that they wanted something similar to IG-88 for the usual nostalgic reasons. "We, as children, are like, 'That's the coolest assassin robot!'" he said. However, they also noted that the droid was "bolted to the floor."

IG-11 was voiced by Taika Waititi and was introduced in the first episode. Although Din Djarin had to kill the droid to protect Baby Yoda, it was later brought back in Episode 7 where it had been rebuilt and reprogrammed by Kuiil to watch over The Child. Sadly, IG-11 was completely destroyed in the season finale.

Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian will air on Disney+ on May 4.
