Star Wars hasn't appeared on the big screen since 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. However, this looks set to change with two of the franchise's stars from the Disney Plus series, The Mandalorian, set to make their silver screen debut.
The Mandalorian and Grogu has been given a release date by Disney, slated to arrive in cinemas on May 22, 2026, seven years after the last Star Wars cinematic release.
Pedro Pascal will once more don the Beskar armour to reprise his role as Din Djarin, the ruthless bounty hunter with a heart, alongside the loveable 'Baby Yoda' Grogu.
In January, Disney announced that it would proceed with a Din Djarin and Grogu movie directed by Jon Favreau. Favreau, creator and executive producer of The Mandalorian, has previously worked on big-screen outings for Disney with live-action adaptations of The Jungle Book (2016) and The Lion King (2019).
Pedro Pascal celebrated the announcement with an Instagram post featuring concept art from The Mandalorian and a song from the soundtrack, Ludwig Göransson's 'Hey Mando!'.
The Mandalorian, which premiered in 2019, was the first-ever live-action TV series in the Star Wars franchise. Pascal stars as the title character, and the show has run for three well-received seasons, making The Mandalorian the vehicle for Star Wars' return to cinemas is a smart move.
Another announced Star Wars movie, from Academy Award- and Emmy Award-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, will feature Daisy Ridley returning to the role of Rey Skywalker. Details are sparse on the project, except that it will feature Rey trying to rebuild a New Jedi order.
Until the movies hit cinema screens, Star Wars fans still have plenty to tide them over with the upcoming show The Acolyte and the newly announced Tales of the Empire, both of which will step away from the usual heroic outings and take a look at the darker side of the never-ending battle between good and evil.
