Star Wars: The Last Jedi Director Rian Johnson Shuts Down Trilogy Rumors

Game of Thrones creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff might have exited their Star Wars trilogy, but fans are still expecting Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson to continue with his own set of Star Wars films.

Unfortunately, it seems like Lucasfilm still hasn't fully mapped out the future of the galaxy far, far away after the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Though some expect Johnson's Star Wars trilogy to be a done deal, the filmmaker is debunking rumors that Lucasfilm has already granted him the newly opened 2022 release date for his film.

"Every single day there's a new thing. Until it's up on StarWars.com, don't believe it," the director said in an interview with Cinema Blend.

It's a pretty short response, but then again, there's been a whole lot of rumors about Johnson's trilogy. Star Wars: The Last Jedi haters have been hoping that Lucasfilm might cancel the project, though the filmmaker has promised fans time and time again that he's still discussing things with the studio.

Johnson's Star Wars movie might have been a major commercial and critical success for Lucasfilm's sequel trilogy, however, it's also become one of the most divisive entries in the franchise. There's been a very vocal minority who've expressed outrage against The Last Jedi, bashing the film for subverting fan expectations and for allegedly "misusing" legacy characters like Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).

Despite all of these complaints, The Last Jedi managed to bring the franchise to new directions, and that kind of quality is something that Star Wars is going to need after Episode IX culminates the Skywalker saga.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
