There has been a lot of excitement about the upcoming Star Wars series The Acolyte since it will explore a brand new territory in the universe with the project being set during the High Republic era and around 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace.
For the past couple of months, we've been hearing a lot of updates about the series as production is currently underway including the casting of several known actors to its ensemble. Now, it looks like another cast member has been added and it's a familiar face from the sequel trilogy.
As reported by ComicBook.com, it was revealed during the Star Wars Celebration event that Joonas Suotamo, who played Chewbacca in the sequel trilogy, has joined the cast of The Acolyte. This time around, he will be playing the role of the Wookiee Jedi Kelnacca.
"BIG NEWS! I'm playing Wookiee Jedi Kelnacca in #TheAcolyte! That's right, a WOOKIEE JEDI. I'm beyond thrilled to be returning to #StarWars as part of a new and exciting original story and I can't wait for you to see it," the actor tweeted regarding the announcement.
It is exciting to hear that the series will have a Wookiee Jedi character and Suotamo himself is returning to the franchise to play the role. Now, it is curious to see how he'll play into the series and fans are definitely hoping that he will do a lot of awesome lightsaber scenes.
The series is a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era. A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.
The cast also includes Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Charlie Barnett, Dean-Charles Chapman, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Margarita Levieva. Leslye Headland serves as the showrunner of the series.
