Star Wars Rogue One Director Gareth Edwards Set To Direct New Science Fiction Movie

It's been a while since Gareth Edwards directed the critically-acclaimed Star Wars spinoff movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but it looks like the filmmaker is ready to get behind the camera, this time for a science fiction movie outside of Lucasfilm's galaxy far, far away.

According to a report by Variety, Edwards is set to write and direct a brand new untitled science fiction movie. The project was just recently picked up by New Regency, the same studio that made the critically acclaimed science fiction movie Ad Astra and the Academ Award-winning movie The Revenant.

The entertainment news outlet doesn't have that many details about Edwards new project, however, the movie is supposed to be what the site describes as a "near-future sci-fi story."

Right now Edwards is working on looking for the cast of the film. Production is being eyed to begin this summer.

Interestingly enough, this movie is going to be the first film that Edwards has worked on since Rogue One. While the filmmaker has been busy "developing several projects" after working on the Star Wars spinoff, Edwards would take precautions picking the next movie that he'd work on. New Regency was quick to pounce at the opportunity to produce the film once the filmmaker started shopping the project ā€“ something which shouldn't come as a surprise given Edwards' track record. Back in 2010 Edwards directed Monsters, an independent film which led the filmmaker to direct the Godzilla reboot in 2014. The reboot grossed more than $524 million at the global box office, and in the end the film sparked Legendary's "Monster-Verse." After that, Edwards went on to direct Rogue One.

We can't wait to hear more about Edwards new project. We hope that New Regency will give more details as production moves along.
