It can't be denied that Supreme Leader Snoke could have easily been one of the most memorable Star Wars villains in recent memory but the sequel trilogy made it clear that the character wasn't meant to be a huge deal and if anything, he was just utilized as an excuse to set up for the eventual return of Emperor Palpatine aka Darth Sidious in the finale. Naturally, fans were disappointed with the execution of the character which a lot of them believe could have been something more.

Other than the fact that Palpatine created the character, other details about Snoke's convoluted backstory remain unaddressed. Now, in an effort to clear some things about the character and pull another shocker, Star Wars is making a stunning revelation about Snoke and it has something to do with Luke's severed limb from Empire Strikes Back.

In the eleventh issue of Darth Vader's current comic book run published by Marvel Comics (via The Direct), it was hinted that Luke's hand which was chopped off by Vader himself in Episode V was recovered in Bespin and its DNA may have been responsible for the creation of Supreme Leader Snoke. In one of the panels in the said issue, Vader says: "I can use it to make anything" while looking at Luke's severed hand which is contained in its own chamber.

I totally get that the comics are meant to be an extension of the sequel trilogy and they also serve as an avenue to address unanswered issues within the franchise. However, outrageous reveals such as Luke's limb being used to create Snoke only makes the character's backstory more convoluted and confusing than it already is. Episode IX clearly didn't hint anything about this new "twist" so the fact that we are only learning about it now seems a little pointless and if anything, it's just an attempt for the writers to weasel their way out of telling the character's true origin.
