Star Wars: Luke Skywalker's Lowest TLJ Moment Mirrors Iconic Return Of The Jedi Scene

Remember when Luke Skywalker tried to kill his own nephew while the boy is sleeping in Star Wars: The Last Jedi? There's a good reason why that scene looks so familiar. It's a parallel to that iconic scene from Return of the Jedi where Luke almost kills his own father.

In Return of the Jedi, Luke fights and defeats Darth Vader, effectively chopping off the villain's mechanical arm. This is when Palpatine steps in and tries to convince him to kill Vader and take his father's place as Darth Sidious' new apprentice. There is a moment when Luke actually seems to consider this, and we see that same face being made by Mark Hamill in The Last Jedi.

The similarity has been shared on Twitter and Star Wars fans simply can't get enough of it.

So was it all just coincidence? TLJ director Rian Johnson has confirmed that this is exactly what he wanted to show at that moment when Luke realizes that he had failed.

"You're right that some of these parallels are just 'it's a close-up of the same character' but this one was very intentional. It's why I had him look down at his mechanical hand holding the saber," Johnson wrote.

Although Luke managed to avoid disaster (sort of) in Return of the Jedi, the same thing can't be said in TLJ. Ben saw that his uncle was trying to kill him and immediately rebelled, turning into Kylo Ren.

Will we see a similar moment again soon? Find out when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20.
