Star Wars: Kathleen Kennedy Clarifies Logan Director's Involvement in Planned Boba Fett Film

We're already happy with The Mandalorian and its upcoming spin-off series The Book of Boba Fett. However, there was a time when we were expecting a film that would be all about the bounty hunter. So were Josh Trank or James Mangold initially set to work on the project? Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has spoken up about what happened to the original Boba project.

Back in early 2013, it was officially announced that a Boba Fett film is in development with Simon Kinberg writing. Sometime in 2014, Josh Trank was reportedly attached to direct a Star Wars movie (believed to be the Fett project) but later left due to creative differences. By May 2018 there were reports of James Mangold being involved but the Boba film never came to be as The Mandalorian was later announced.

So what happened to the Boba Fett movie and just how far did Trank and Mangold get before the project was scrapped? Kennedy explained to Empire magazine that not much happened with either director.

"There really was virtually no previous development. We never got very far with Josh, quite frankly, because we never developed anything specific with him," Kennedy said. "And Jim Mangold never worked on a Boba Fett story."

It's interesting to learn that nothing much happened to the Boba Fett movie although everyone was talking about possible developments on the project. However, it sounds like it never got beyond being an idea that led to what is now The Mandalorian. As a bonus, we got the awesome spin-off The Book of Boba Fett as well so, in the end, it worked out well for all of us.

The Mandalorian will return with its third season sometime in 2022. In the meantime, The Book of Boba Fett is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on December 29, 2021.
