Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker might be carrying a lot of weight as the third and final entry in Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy, but director J.J. Abrams says that he didn't really feel the need to be as secretive with the movie as he was with Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The Star Wars filmmaker just recently spoke in an interview with Uproxx to help promote The Rise of Skywalker, and during the discussion with the entertainment news outlet, Abrams revealed why he gave away some of the biggest twists in Episode IX like the surprise return of Emperor Palpatine. Star Wars fans weren't expecting the Sith Lord to make his way back to the franchise after falling off the death star in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, but the very first teaser for The Rise of Skywalker revealed his return.
"People who are aware of the ‘mystery box' thing ask about it. And I think people have different senses about what it is, as I do," Abrams explained, "For me, it's not anything I ever think about. It's not something I apply to my work. It's simply a deconstruction that any good story makes you want to know what comes next. Usually, it does that by implying something."
The Rise of Skywalker might be one of the biggest films of the year, but according to Abrams, none of what he's done on the film's promotional campaign has been "strategic."
The director doesn't want to be "coy" about what he's doing with the movie because he already feels confident about what Episode IX really is. Still, despite all this, we assume that Abrams still has a few surprises hidden up his sleeve, and we can't wait to see them revealed when the movie premieres this month.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set to release on December 20, 2019.
