Star Wars Inspired James Gunn to Make the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

When Guardians of the Galaxy came out back in 2014, a lot of people were citing the influences from Star Wars and other science fantasy titles. What's interesting is that Gunn is set to further the Star Wars comparison by giving the Guardians their own Holiday Special; what's fun is, it's a direct homage to a galaxy far far away.

After the special was officially announced online, Gunn had posted:

Though a lot of people have branded the Star WarsHoliday Special as the worst thing to happen to the franchise, a lot of fans have decided to embrace its existence, and Disney had even released a LEGOStar Wars Holiday Special earlier this year.

We don't know exactly what to expect with the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special yet, but seeing that the main theme of the franchise is about found family, it's the perfect set of characters for a holiday special.

It's going to be a while before we get Guardians Vol. 3 in theaters, so it's great that we can run into Star-Lord and the rest of the crew sometime earlier. It's expected that this special will be shot at the same time as Vol. 3, so it would be a nice update on the family before we get to see them have what is expected to be the conclusion of their adventures—at least, for this roster of the Guardians.

The Guardians of the GalaxyHoliday Special is set to come out on Disney+ late 2022, followed by the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 sometime in 2023.
