Since The Rise of Skywalker's premiere, Star Wars fans have been expressing their disappointment with the movie, especially with the lack of screentime of Kelly Marie Tran's Rose Tico. However, some fans got even more furious upon the discovery of Dominic Monaghan's previous interview on how he got a role in the film.
Prior to Episode IX's debut, Monaghan made an appearance on the Distraction Pieces with Scroobius Pip podcast (per Inverse) where he revealed that director J.J. Abrams sent him an email saying that he has a part for him in The Rise of Skywalker. The actor wrote back and said he won't bother him, but Abrams could let him know if there's anything he can do. The director responded with a soccer bet, saying that if England beat Colombia, he'd be cast in the film. "I was like, ‘oh mate, you bastard,'" Monaghan said.
When this article resurfaced, some fans of Tran weren't exactly happy with this which led them to talk about yet another one of their disappointments about the film.
The Rise of Skywalker writer Chris Terrio admitted that one of the reasons Rose had less scenes is because of the "difficulty of using Carrie [Fisher]'s footage" in the way they actually wanted to. The scenes they wrote with Rose and General Leia didn't "meet the standard of photo-realism" that they hoped for. "The last thing we were doing was deliberately trying to sideline Rose," Terrio added.
Regardless of the initial plans, some people were still frustrated with the results of the final cut. Rose had barely over a minute of screentime and fans think that the character deserved better, especially since Rose's story was built up in The Last Jedi for her to only be sidelined in the final movie.
