Star Wars: Episode IX Poster May Debunk Popular Knights Of Ren Theory

Aside from Rey's (Daisy Ridley) true origin and the nitty-gritty about the return of Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), Star Wars fans are also eager to learn more about the Knights of Ren in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Though the characters were introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, they were only very briefly touched upon in the film and they were completely forgotten in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Now, as fans anticipate the first full trailer for Episode IX, a newly released art piece for the film seems to disprove a major theory about the Knights of Ren's origin. It has been popularly assumed from Luke's (Mark Hamill) backstory for Ben Solo (Adam Driver) that the Knights of Ren were actually some of the Jedi Master's former padawans who were learning at the same temple as the wayward son of Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Leia (the late Carrie Fisher). According to the fan theory, these padawans were swayed by Kylo and by Supreme Leader Snoke. They eventually become the Knights of Ren.

The theory fit for some time because not only did it fit in with the narrative set by Luke in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but it also fits with the depictions of the Knights of Ren in The Art of the Force Awakens and The Art of the Last Jedi where they have lightsabers at their waist and on top of their weapons.

However, it seems like new art for The Rise of Skywalker shows the Knights of ren with regular weapons. They might have cool designs, but the iron spears and axes don't really seem to do much with the Jedi. This could mean that the Knights of Ren are mercenaries instead, not former Padawans. We'll have to wait and see.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
