Star Wars: Episode IX Fan Theory Suggests Rey is Actually Schmi Skywalker in a Time Loop

Rey's (Daisy Ridley) parentage has been one of the most highly contested mysteries in Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy. Sure, Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have revealed that the Jakku Orphan was nothing more than the daughter of a couple of drunken junkers, but fans continue to hold on to the hopes that Rey has ties to legacy characters like Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor).

Now that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is inching closer to its release this December, fans have been cooking up wild theories about Rey's origin, and one of the most recent claims suggests that the sequel trilogy heroine might be caught in a time loop.

It might sound crazy, but according to the channel New Rockstar, Rey might be the very root of the Skywalker family tree. Instead of having Rey as the daughter of Luke Skywalker, this new theory by the site suggests that Rey might be the heroes' grandmother, Schmi Skywalker.

New Rockstar builds this idea around a recent Star Wars comic which features Darth Vader trying to make sense of his origins by using the Force to look into his past. There, the Sith Lord learns that Emperor Palpatine was the one who manipulated midichlorians to fill Shmi Skywalker's womb with the powerful "Chosen One" – Anakin Skywalker.

According to the site, Palpatine needed a special woman to become Anakin Skywalker's mother, and this woman was Rey. The theory suggests that Palpatine tries to look for Rey in The Rise of Skywalker so he can throw her back in the past and impregnate her with the Dark Side.

It's an insane theory, we know, but it's also pretty entertaining. What do you think? Is Rey Anakin Skywalker's mother? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
