Star Wars Episode IX: Carrie Fisher's Daughter Insisted on Keeping Scenes She Shared with Her Mother

Though Carrie Fisher may have died in 2016, she's going to be appearing in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker via archive footage from the past two films. Fisher's daughter Billie Lourd has also been in the new trilogy as Lt. Connix, and though Abrams had wanted to cut some her scenes with Fisher, Lourd insisted that she be in the scenes that her mother was in.

As per Vanity Fair, Abrams was said to have written Lourd out of her scenes with Fisher, as they might have been too painful for the actress, but Lourd insisted that she wanted to be in them. Abrams explained:

"And so, there are moments where they're talking; there are moments where they're touching… There are moments in this movie where Carrie is there, and I really do feel there is an element of the uncanny, spiritual, you know, classic Carrie, that it would have happened this way because somehow it worked. And I never thought it would."

After Rogue One, Lucasfilm had made a promise not to recreate Fisher with CGI as they did with Tarkin and Leia in RO. While some fans thought that Leia's death would occur offscreen, I'm interested to see what Abrams has in store for Leia's role in TROS that they had to keep her in the film.

For now, we only have a vague idea of what to expect in Episode IX. We know that it's been a while since the ending of The Last Jedi and that Rey, Finn, and the rest of the Resistance are still up against the First Order. Also for some reason, Palpatine will be back, but we have no idea why. My guess is it will have something to do with new Force power, but there's a bunch of other ways it can happen from clones to old holocrons.

Catch Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in theaters Dec. 20.
