Star Wars: Dave Filoni Explains How The Mandalorian Started Out as Boba Fett Fanfiction

At this point, Star Wars fans believe that The Mandalorian started out as the discarded Boba Fett standalone movie. However, Dave Filoni has just confirmed that although Boba was the inspiration that led to the Star Wars series, the show's storyline started off as a completely original idea from creator Jon Favreau.

Filoni recently took part in Deadline's virtual Contenders Television event where he stated that there "wasn't really any crossover with any previous development" when it comes to the Boba Fett film. He then revealed that The Mandalorian "really starts with Jon Favreau coming forward saying he'd like to develop a concept and talking with Kathleen Kennedy about it."

"She knew I had done a lot of work with Mandalorian people and culture on Clone Wars with George over the years. She always knew that I knew Jon," Filoni said of the Lucasfilm president. "She called me in when Jon pitched this idea, and he really loved the imagery of a lone gunman and Western. When we were kids, Boba Fett was a Man With No Name. Even his publicity stills were evocative of the [Sergio Leone] Dollar trilogy."

So what does this all mean? It sounds like Favreau somehow pitched his own little fanfiction that reimagines Boba as the lead in a Western film. Either way, it was a great idea and we're glad that Kennedy encouraged both Favreau and Filoni to work on The Mandalorian.

The Mandalorian Season 2 is expected to premiere on Disney+ by October.
