Star Wars: Anthony Daniels Originally Refused To Meet With George Lucas Because Of Insulting Role

It's hard to imagine Star Wars without C-3PO and R2-D2. After all, the two droids have appeared in almost every Star Wars film since A New Hope. However, there was a time when Anthony Daniels refused to meet with creator George Lucas because he wasn't happy with the role that was being offered to him.

Daniels recently spoke to Digital Spy about his character's role in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and somehow revealed that he initially thought that he thought playing a droid was insulting.

"It's very odd because I didn't want the interview with George Lucas. I was insulted to be offered the part, or to discuss the part of a robot in a low budget science fiction film," Daniels said.

Luckily, he was convinced to meet with Lucas and the rest is, as they say, history.

"My agent made me go, and here I am today. I am now a heritage player. I have to get this right because I keep calling us heirloom players, which I'm told is a type of vegetable or tomato. It's Harrison [Ford], Mark Hamill, Billy [Dee Williams] and I – and more," Daniels added. "So there you go. It is odd to be the observer, against my will originally, but now with amazement."

We're certainly glad that Daniels decided to take the role since it introduced him to several generations of fans. However, we are a bit wary of Threepio's fate in The Rise of Skywalker. After all, the droid's only line, "Taking one last look at my friends," sounds rather ominous but we're hoping that Threepio will be OK.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20.
