Star Wars Actress Daisy Ridley Under Fire for Her Comments About 'Privilege'

Star Wars fans might love Daisy Ridley for her work in Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy, but it looks like the actress has just recently found herself in the middle of a controversy after an interview to help promote her new movie, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Speaking in an interview with The Guardian, Ridley was asked whether her background helped her navigate the fame and celebrity that she received after becoming one of the main stars in Disney's new Star Wars movies.

Ridley might not have had that much acting experience before Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, however, the actress has had some sort of privilege, like private boarding school and relatives established in the Hollywood film industry.

The actress, however, didn't seem to enjoy the question posed at her.

"The privilege I have – how? No, genuinely, how?" the actress asked back defensively.

The Guardian news reporter explained that the question was meant to ask about how her class and wealth helped her navigate her new celebrity.

Responding to the question, Ridley claimed that the experiences that she's had aren't too different from her Star Wars co-star John Boyega, an actor raised in South London. Not only was Finn actor raised by British-Nigerian immigrant parents, but he had to apply for a hardship fund just so that he could join the Theatre Peckham.

Despite this, Ridley insisted that she had the same experience.

"Well no, because, no… John grew up on a council estate in Peckham and I think me and him are similar enough that… no," the Star Wars actress went on.

Ridley's response has sparked ire from the fanbase, with many pointing out on Twitter how ignorant the actress is of her privilege.

Though some fans would defend the actress and say that Ridley was just lucky to be picked by J.J. Abrams instead of a name brand Hollywood star, it would have been great if the sequel trilogy lead would have had some more awareness of the privilege she's had.

It's a bit disappointing that Ridley seems very much unaware of how the opportunities that have been given to her helped make her the person she is today.
